Storyline
Cop-hating Johnny Strabler is recounting the fateful events that led up to the "whole mess" as he calls it, his role in the mess and whether he could have stopped it from happening. The Black Rebels, a motorcycle gang of which Johnny is the leader, cause a ruckus using intimidation wherever they go, with their actions bordering on the unlawful. On the day of the mess, they invade a motorcycle racing event, at which they cause a general disturbance culminating with one of the gang members stealing a second place trophy to give to Johnny. Despite not being the larger winning trophy, it symbolizes to Johnny his leadership within the group. Their next stop is a small town where their disturbance and intimidation tactics continue. Some in town don't mind their arrival as long as they spend money. Έγινε διάσημος ως ερμηνευτής από την πρώτη του ταινία, The Men. Έγινε όμως σύμβολο μιας ολόκληρης γενιάς με την ταινία The Wild One. Ο Μάρλον Μπράντο είναι ο επαναστάτης χωρίς αιτία, με το δερμάτινο μπουφάν και τις μοτοσυκλέτες, που δεν μένει πουθενά και ζει παντού. Μαζί με τη συμμορία του, τους Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, διασχίζει τους δρόμους, τριγυρνάει τη χώρα χωρίς νόημα, ζει για το τώρα. Η γενιά που δεν έζησε τον πόλεμο, έφερε τις αναταραχές μέσα στο ίδιο της το κράτος. Που για άλλη μια φορά, το κράτος αντιμετωπίζει το διαφορετικό, το άγνωστο, ως κάτι ξένο και κακό. Η λύση στο πρόβλημα θα είναι η βία και τα όπλα. Ο Ούγγρος σκηνοθέτης Laslo Benedek στην πιο διάσημη ταινία του παρουσιάζει την ανήσυχη γενιά της εποχής του, χωρίς να κρίνει, χωρίς να παίρνει θέση. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι είναι ένα μοντέρνο γουέστερν· αντί για άλογα, οι πρωταγωνιστές καβαλάνε τις μοτοσυκλέτες τους και ξεσηκώνουν με τα καμώματά τους τις μικρές επαρχιακές πόλεις.

Για να μην το ξεχάσω, σημειώνουμε ότι ο σερίφης στην ταινία, ο ηθοποιός Robert Keith, ήταν ο πατέρας του επίσης ηθοποιού Brian Keith. Η εμφάνιση του Lee Marvin είναι ξεκαρδιστικά απολαυστική. Η ταινία ήταν απαγορευμένη στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο μέχρι το 1967! Και μια τελευταία παρατήρηση: δύο διάσημα μουσικά συγκροτήματα πήρανε τα ονόματά τους από αυτά των δύο συμμοριών: το ένα είναι, φυσικά, το προαναφερθέν Black Rebel Motorcycle Club και το άλλο οι... Beatles!
