Is Joan As Police Woman’s fifth album the sound of an artist shaking off her sadness? That was certainly the impression you got from lead single Holy City, a Motown-esque number featuring blasts of horns and a rap from comedian Reggie Watts.

Listen to The Classic further and you get an increased sense that Joan Wasser, once known for her intimate torch songs, is playfully experimenting here: the title track even ventures into what can only really be described as doo-wop beatboxing.
