Synopis:

On a 4th of July weekend, three barnstorming skydivers arrive to perform in a small Kansas town. They are hosted by the youngest member Webson's aunt, the unhappily married Elizabeth. While Browdy one-nights with a topless dancer, a doomed romance flares up between Elizabeth and Rettig. Tension builds, and explodes with a spectacular skydiving show.

Em Bridgeport, Kansas, chegam Mike Rettig (Burt Lancaster), Joe Browdy (Gene Hackman) e Malcolm Webson (Scott Wilson). Eles viajam fazendo um show de pára-quedistas, no qual fazem saltos de exibição. Malcolm é o novato do grupo e Mike é o veterano. Entre eles está Joe, que com sua conversa consegue atrair multidões para ver o show. Nesta cidade Malcolm arruma para que fiquem hospedados na casa dos tios, Allen (William Windom) e Elizabeth Brandon (Deborah Kerr), cujo casamento está em crise.
