The Night Digger is a well-regarded cult film that died at the box-office upon its initial release in 1971. Patricia Neal stars as Maura Prince, the repressed middle-aged adopted daughter of blind and elderly Mrs. Edith Prince. Both women are drawn to Billy Jarvis, a seriously disturbed young handyman whom they shield from the authorities. Maura and Edith are particularly fascinated by Billy's mysterious nocturnal forays. When Maura decides to offer herself sexually to Billy, she learns to her horror just why he spends so much time outdoors at night. An eerie Bernard Herrmann score enhances the stomach-churning tension. The Night Digger was an acting tour-de-force for Patricia Neal and emerges as an underrated gem.
