Synopis:

Budapest 1956. A group of Westerners try to leave the city when Soviet military occupy the country. But the airport is closed down and they have to take a bus to the border. At the border they are stopped by red tape - and Major Surov. The reasons are sketchy, but it seems that the major is romantically interested in one of the westerners, Diana Ashmore.

Sinopse Pt Br:

Uma quadrilha liderada por Bob Larkin (Fonda) chega em Firecreek, um lugarejo bem pacato cujo "xerife" é Johnny Cobb (Stewart), um pequeno fazendeiro. Cobb no momento está preocupado, pois sua mulher, Henrietta (Scott), está para dar a luz pela terceira vez. Inicialmente Cobb, como o resto da população, tenta fingir que não se incomodam com os homens de Larkin, apesar de se portarem de forma cada vez mais inconveniente e até mesmo criminosa. Larkin tenta se recuperar de um ferimento, pois tinha sido baleado e a bala fora retirada na véspera, mas ainda sangra muito. Cobb aos poucos percebe que esta situação o exige a ficar mais no povoado, algo que normalmente não fazia. De início Cobb tenta argumentar com os bandidos, mas como não deu certo e ainda resultou em mais violência, então fez o que ninguém da quadrilha esperava: revidou
