The concept of forming a supergroup which combined virtuoso musicians and a pop style singer was originally spawned by Executive Producer, Bill Evans, back in 2008. The first and final line-up came to include Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Casey McPherson (lead vocals), and Steve Morse (guitar). Their debut album was recorded with the help of music producer Peter Collins.

The self-titled debut studio album was released on March 26, 2012. It debuted at No. 9 on Billboard's Hard Rock chart, and No. 11 on the BBC's Rock Album chart. The band later recorded a Blu-ray/DVD, "Live In Europe", which was released in October 15, 2013, featuring live performance footage during their European tour.

On December 16, 2013, the band announced that songwriting had been completed for their second studio album: Second Nature.
