Whether you call it Tropical New Wave or Urban Brazilian Disco – it's definitely some some brand new rhythms Da Cruz are coming up with on their 4th release „Disco e Progresso“.


This Swiss-Brazilian collaboration gets ambitious on its third LP by deciding to release two discs in one, more than doubling the number of tracks on its full-length albums from 10 each on Corpo Elétrico (2008) and Sistema Subversiva (2011) to 41 in total. The character of the group’s music hasn’t changed dramatically but the quality hasn’t gone down either.

I may be imagining things, but the sound seems less contented than it used to be, with fewer longueurs, and when you’re working with this kind of beat-driven, rhythm-driven electro-samba-boogie-and-other-styles mix, then that’s actually a plus. The “Light Side” set is tuned to the personality of Oliver Husmann’s cavaquinho and “Dark Side” reminds you that the programmer Ane H. came from an industrial noise background.
