“Last Night in Hamburg”, recorded during the last week of December 1962 at the Star-Club during their final Hamburg residency, is fascinating, a real treasure to any Beatles fan.

These performances, made on a portable reel-to-reel recorder, take listeners back to a time when the Beatles were about to become huge; they were still playing small clubs. The audio quality is poor, but still listenable. The Beatles’ raw energy, comes through loud and clear.

This album is devoted almost exclusively to covers; "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Ask Me Why" are among the few Lennon-McCartney originals. Early rock & roll songs are a major focus.

Although the Beatles sound like diamonds in the rough on these performances, they had clearly developed a very distinctive sound.

One of the best-known semi-official Beatles releases.
