78 works by 36 prominent artists of the 19th and 20th centuries were made available for summer installations in Washington and New York City by Nathan Cummings, New York industrialist. The selection of 62 paintings and 16 sculptures was made jointly by the National Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the works were shown the following summer. For the first time sculpture was displayed outside the National Gallery building, a monumental bronze by Henry Moore in front of the Constitution Avenue entrance and a work in marble by Antoine Poncet at the corner adjoining the Mall.
