You can use these subtitles with any version if you synchronize them with the video:
tools>track synchronization>synchronization>subtitles/video>subtitle track synchronization
To synchronize with the 10 gigabyte download "A Viagem de Chihiro / Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" increase subtitle delay by 1.5 seconds.
It is an excellent quality Japanese language version and you can turn off the portuguese subtitles.

In case all you see is boxes:
Go to Tools -> Preferences>Show Settings: change to All in the bottom left corner
Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text Rendering Module: Change from Default to Freetype2 font renderer
Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text Renderer -> Font: and choose Unicode font (like Arial Unicode MS)
Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

Step One: listen carefully to the audio while either watching, or by listening to the included ripped track from the movie (alt+ctrl+left or right arrow is convenient for skipping back and forward 5 seconds in iTunes). Pick apart each sound and transcribe them to paper as you go, using the srt file as a guide until you have fairly memorized the movie.
Step Two: Get a Japanese girlfriend/friends and try out variations of the gramamtical forms and vocabulary found throghout the movie in order to burn them into your memory.
