In the spring of 1966 Lord Norwich travelled by Land Rover and camel some two housand
miles across the Sahara: out from southern Algeria, through the Republic of Niger,
and into Chad. This is the story of that expedition, and of how it nearly ended 1n
tragedy. But it is also considerably more, for into it the author has interwoven themes from the desert's history and even its pre-history, and recorded thoughts and reflections that occurred to him as he moved along.
