For a very quick ride over the 1930s not bad and you can pick up this 1998 Time/Life 'Our American century' series book 'Hard times' quite cheaply but I would suggest that their original book, in the 'Our fabulous century' series (1870 to 1970) is better value and though published in 1969 it's still available and also still cheap, too. The 1969 book had 288 pages and Hard Times has 192. What's been left out are these three chapters: Café society; 1939 New York World's Fair and a picture section called 'Main Street'. Why these last two were omitted seems a real mistake. The twenty-one photos in the 'Main Street' pages are fascinating.

The 1969 edition had a cloth cover with a design appropriate to the times (each book in the series had a different cloth design) and I preferred the layouts to the earlier book rather than this 1998 edition, the printing is better as well. Other than the three chapters that were left out the material is more or less the same in both books though I think there are more photos in the earlier one.

Since the original publication in 1969 these backward looking books have been reprinted and renamed several times and no doubt each edition has been edited here and there but I think the '69 version is the one to look out for, if only for the extra ninety-six pages.
