This is the first history of Pre-Raphaelitism to concentrate on the painting itself since 1899, when Percy Bate's pleasant The English Pre-Raphaelite Painters and their Successors was published, and it offers some adjustments to the straight art history, as it were, of the movement, and also reinterprets the activities of several of the artists. In the absence of much detailed discussion of the period, some of my conclusions are necessarily tentative, even though presented here as the last word on the subject
