Akbar Ganji wrote “A Manifesto for Republic” while in prison in 2002. The book established him as the first \"prominent dissident, believing Muslim and former revolutionary\" to call for a replacement of Iran\'s theocratic system with \"a democracy.\" Written in six chapters the books lays out the basis of his proposal for a fully-fledged democratic republic for Iran. The books also argued that all elections in the Islamic Republic of Iran must be boycotted – a view that was not shared by all of his supporters.
