start q4pause.exe
start quake4.exe

search server and connect
after you stuck in connection with message "waiting for authorization"
press f1 and wait 10 seconds, after that you should connect, if not, try again pressing f1.

if you see max-pure-packs error after a while -> remove some pk4 files from q4base that addons you won't use, or easy way download torrent again.

to pop up console press ctrl+alt+~ (tilde) button near escape.

Please seed long as you can.

This works on Win XP, on other OS not tested.
