In an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chestars Mill, Maine, the town suddenly, quite unexpectedly, is sealed to the outside world by an invisible field. Passing airplanes crash into it, the cars explode on impact, even the gardener's hand is severed as "the Dome" appears.

People come to the city for business are forced to remain separated from their families.

Nobody can understand what this invisible barrier, where it came from and whether it will ever go away.
