Back in the '90s, TLC was called The Learning Channel; in keeping with its name, it commissioned highly original and educational programming.

The Operation dates from this period, and is now virtually impossible to get hold of, yet its unflinching, unpatronising coverage of the amazing work surgeons do every day still stands up almost 15 years later as a truly great exemplar of documentary television.

This is a small selection from the show's 5-season run that was captured on VHS at the time, transferred to DVD-R, and recently ripped and cropped to remove adverts. If I could obtain the whole series on prerecorded VHS, I'd put it up here in better quality, but this is sadly all that survives in my collection
