Although there are many works on American military history, and each of the service branches has numerous narrative histories, this is the only A-Z work on the four service branches of the U.S. Author Axelrod is a military historian who coauthored the publisher's Encyclopedia of Wars (2005).

Volume 1 contains entries for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Volume 2 contains entries for the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. More than 1,200 entries deal with the history of each service; its command organization; heroes and leaders; equipment, weapons, and uniforms; mission and role; life and traditions; and special terminologies.

Length of entries ranges from a few lines to eight or nine pages. Each section has entries for military installations, decorations and medals, and ranks and grades specific to each branch. But some topics are covered inconsistently. For example, entry headings for Careers and Chain of command appear only in the section on the U.S. Air Force, and entry headings for Personal and miscellaneous equipment and Promotion system appear only in the section on the U.S. Marine Corps. Entries are concise and well written, and many are accompanied by black-and-white illustrations. Each volume contains separate alphabetical lists of entries for the two branches it covers as well as lists of acronyms. Topically arranged bibliographies for each service branch can be found in volume 2. In addition to printed works, the bibliographies contain many references to official Web sites and other online sources.

The work is intended for students, researchers, military professionals, military buffs, and the general reader and should satisfy them all. It would be a good reference source for high-school, academic, and public libraries as well as for personal collections.
