Present-day historians and classical scholars derive their notion of the Scythians primarily from the colorful and tolerant description given by Herodotus (Book IV), whose travels took him to the southern border of Scythia. In the meantime, new excavations and research in the Soviet Union and immediate neighbouring areas has completely transformed the image of the Scythians. The most important findings, which compel us to reexamine and revise completly out ideas of ancient horse-riding nomadic cultures, will be dealt with in this book.
