The subject was taken from a "bad" theatrical play by Paul Anthelme, pseudonym of Paul Bourde, Nos Deux Consciences, dating back to 1902. Hitchcock was nevertheless fascinated by the proposed theme, the inviolability of the secret of confession, and since the thirties , when he discovered this drama, he was nurturing the plan of making a film of it
