The band's history began in 1969 when Colin Hodgkinson (bass) and Ron Esperi (saxophone), members of a South Coast dance band, tried to make their first recordings together. Later, both moved to London, where they parted: the first got a job with Alexis Corner, and the second took up session business. Colin and Ron met again in Yorkshire, where they played in the home team "Redcars Starlight Club". In 1971, the guys found a suitable drummer in the person of Tony Hicks, and the resulting trio began working under the banner "Back Door". In order to get a contract, the ensemble prepared several demos, but major labels did not want to hear anything about the new team, where there is not a single guitarist, let alone a vocalist.
Everywhere musicians received the standard answer: "no singer, no contract". However, the refusals were unjustified, as Hodgkinson was so skilled with the bass that he turned it into a true lead instrument. Finally, the guys from the Black Entrance decided to record an album on their own, and the owner of one of the Yorkshire pubs, where the group performed weekly, financed the hasty sessions.
The selection of short tense jams imprinted on the disc, in which elements of jazz, funk, soul, blues and hard rock merged, aroused genuine interest among the public. And although the circulation of the disc was rather small (1000 copies), one of the copies ended up at the NME headquarters, and the magazine printed an admiring review. It was followed by other flattering reviews, and in the wake of its growth in popularity, "Back Door" received an invitation to open Chick Corea's "Return To Forever" concerts. At this stage, the majors have changed their minds about the musicians they had previously rejected, and a battle broke out between them to make a deal with the Yorkshire trio. The winner was the company "Warner Bros", which immediately re-released the debut longplay in a much larger circulation.
In 1973, the team went to America, where the album "8th Street Nites" was recorded. The record was produced by Felix Pappalardi ("Cream"), and on several tracks Hodgkinson tried himself as a vocalist. The work turned out to be even more interesting, and the blues covers of Leadbelly and Robert Johnson left the best impressions.
The release of the disc was accompanied by a number of tours, in which Back Door was accompanied by ELP, Alexis Korner and the J. Geils Band. Subsequently, keyboardist Dave McRae appeared in the line-up, and vocalist Peter Torap, guitarist Bernie Holland and arranger Michael Gibbs were also noted at regular sessions. On "Another Fine Mess", the band experimented a bit with electronics, while still remaining true to their jazz/rock roots. McRae soon disappeared, and Hicks left with him, as Colin and Ron wanted to find a drummer who played hard. In 1976, they hired Adrian Tilbrook as their drummer, with whom the "Activate" CD was recorded.
However, this album, produced by Carl Palmer ("ELP"), turned out to be a swan song for the team, and soon the activity of "Back Door" came to naught. Runions of the original line-up occurred twice - in 1986, when a short British tour took place, and in 2003, when the album "Askin The Way" was released, made up of six reworkings of old things and thirteen new numbers.
On August 13, 2006, Tony Hicks died, and in 2007 Hodgkinson assembled a trio similar to the "Black Entrance" Colin Hodgkinson Group
