The band was formed by bassist Jim Crichton, vocalist/principal songwriter Michael Sadler, guitarist Ian Crichton, keyboardist Peter Rochon, and drummer Steve Negus.

Formerly known as the Pockets, the quintet was formed in 1977 from the lead musicians of Fludd. The band changed their name to Saga after they started a concept cycle of "Chapters" on their first four albums. Later, in 1999, the band returned to this concept again for the next three albums. "Chapters" was frequently performed at the band's concerts during extended tours of Canada, the United States and some European countries, and was later performed live all in order and was included in the 2005 double live album "The Chapters Live".
