The band was founded in August 1958 by guitarist and bassist, future band leader John Greek. Five singles and one album released between 1959 and 1960 made The Wailers popular on the local scene. Their music was based on rock and roll and surf rock, in addition to the standard line-up, the saxophone and organ played an important role in the group. They eventually became one of the first to play a pushy, dirty, heavy, deliberately "amateur" form of rock and roll, due to which they (thanks to the single "Dirty Robber" in particular) are considered one of the first garage bands to have an impact. considerable influence on the subsequent development of style in the 60s.
