I downloaded the source file "BluRay.1080p.DTS.x264-CHD" and extracted its subtitles, then...
- Used Subtitle Edit (by Nikolaj Lynge Olsson) to find and fix all flagged issues
- "Softened" all subtitled profanity (bastard --> jerk, damn --> darn, bitch --> wench etc.)
- Corrected commonly-found typos, also converting many word pairs into their common English contractions
- Watched the film and made additional corrections, also italicizing music lyrics, characters' thoughts, flashbacks, and some off-screen dialogue.
- Used Handbrake to create the new MKV file, adding my subtitles as soft captions
