This book is the joint attempt of a physicist and a mathematician to write an entirely new type of book for future scientists and engineers. This calls for a few words about its purpose and scientific ideology. Many physicists, as is known, are displeased with the presentation of the basics of mathematical analysis that was introduced by mathematicians in the first half of the 20th century. The reasons are understandable. The development of mathematical research connected with the elaboration of the logical foundations of our science left its imprint on the style of presentation even of the very first chapters of textbooks for beginners. Exact definitions of such concepts as a real number, limit, and continuity were the result of a prolonged and very nontrivial logical analysis of theories that were already created and were intuitively clear (on the scientific level of rigor). These definitions, which are not at all simple for the beginner, same to be used in the wrong context. Textbooks presented them before any explanation was given of the theory and its applications, thereby complicating an understanding of things that were intuitively clear.
