During the six years following the appearance of the first edition of this book many new developments have been made in numerical techniques applied to problems in fluid dynamics. Most of these have been described in companion volumes in the series, especially those by Peyret and Taylor, by Thomasset and by Fletcher. In these works special attention is given to finite element techniques, spectral methods and generalized Galerkin methods. There is no need to duplicate the treatment of these topics in the present volume and the revisions made here are concentrated in two areas. Firstly, Chapter 2, in which the Godunov schemes for unsteady gas dynamics problems were presented, is now expanded to cover Glimm's method. This is a broader version of Godunov's first scheme and has been exploited by Chorin and others in application to one and multidimensional unsteady flow problems. The second revision is in Chapter 5, and covers the many recent applications of the Method of Integral Relations (in its orthonormal version) to turbulent boundary layers, internal pipe flows, and turbulent mixing flows.
