The basis of my experience (know-how) and knowledge (know-why) in coating technology is from the photographic industry, where premetered coating methods were prevalent. The level of understanding in this sector was rather high owing to the complex multilayered products and their demanding requirements for product uniformity and process productivity. In the meantime, mainly due to digital photography, this industry has dramatically faded away, and those researchers, who had acquired much knowledge and experience in premetered coating methods, are now in the process of retiring. Sadly, this means that their wisdom and experience will be lost to public access. At the same time, my continuous involvement as a teacher in short courses indicates to me that the need for good, thorough knowl edge of coating processes is only growing, as new coated products are continually emerging. Products such as lithium-ion batteries or organic photovoltaic films are just two examples of what young people entering this industry using premetered coating methods will later be responsible for efficiently manufacturing. In addition, the chapters about premetered coating methods in the 1997 book Liquid Film Coating were contributed by people who either did not have much practical experience orwho worked for the photographic industry. The latter group of contributors was not allowed to report freely about their knowledge because this industry was very competitive. Consequently, much understanding about premetered coating process was not made available to the public at that time.
