The second edition of 'Algebra' was in three volumes, of which the first introduced groups, rings and vector spaces, covering most of the first-year work in an Honours Mathematics course, while Volumes 2 and 3 dealt with more advanced topics. It has now been suggested that with the inclusion of some of these topics the first volume would form a work standing alone, suitable both for undergraduate work and self-study.
Thus the present work is based on the old Volume 1, with the following additions: Chapter 6 includes an introduction to field extensions, Chapter 10 includes the Wedderburn theory of semisimple rings, the radical and tensor products, and Chapter 11 brings the basic facts on group representations. An appendix on Zorn's lemma and transfinite induction has also been added. The original text has been thoroughly revised and errors have been corrected, hopefully making the whole more 'user-friendly'. Exercises have been added (with sketch solutions at the end), and harder ones are marked by an asterisk. I am again indebted to a number of colleagues for their comments and criticisms.
