La storia si svolge cinque anni dopo gli avvenimenti di Dragon Ball Z, e si conclude a 40 anni dal primo incontro tra Goku e Bulma, con Goku ormai cinquantaduenne. La storia inizia con il ritorno di Goku dall'allenamento con Ub, reincarnazione del Majin Bu originale, con cui il saiyan era partito alla fine di Dragon Ball Z. Tornato bambino a causa di un desiderio mal formulato da parte di Pilaf a Red Shenron, Goku vive nuove avventure in compagnia della nipote Pan e di Trunks e affronta nuovi nemici per garantire la pace sulla Terra.
