Biografia

La storia dei Dire Straits ruota attorno alla mitica figura di Mark Knopfler, famoso chitarrista scozzese, nato a Glasgow il 12 agosto 1949. Knopfler lavora per anni come corrispondente di un giornale di Newcastle per poi passare all'insegnamento della letteratura inglese.

La sua passione per la musica si concretizza grazie alla collaborazione del fratello David e di un amico di questo, il bassista John Illsley, con i quali fonda il nucleo dei Dire Straits (che significa "Gigantesche difficoltà", nome scherzoso ispirato dalla scarsa retribuizione dei musicisti). Siamo sul finire degli anni '70 e la musica Punk è all'apice della sua espansione; non stupisce quindi l'indifferenza che accompagna le prime esibizioni del gruppo di Knopfler. Grazie all'ingresso di Pick Whiters (ex batterista dei "Mal and the Primitives&quot e alla pubblicazione, nel 1978, del loro primo album ("Dire Straits&quot la band acquista una certa notorietà, incrementata anche dallo stile molto personale di Mark Knopfler. Questi è infatti tra i primi chitarristi rock a suonare senza l'aiuto del plettro, basandosi semplicemente sull'uso delle dita (si parla, ovviamente, di chitarra elettrica). Inoltre, pur essendo mancino, suona la chitarra col manico per destri, generando particolari effetti acustici. La fama ottenuta con l'album "Communique" consente a Knopfler di partecipare all'incisione degli album "Slow train coming e "Infidels" di Bob Dylan, mito giovanile dell'artista scozzese.


Il successo arriva con l'album "Making Movies" (1981) che infrange numerosi record di vendite. Tra i componenti del gruppo nascono però i primi dissapori, e Mark Knopler, in seguito a discussioni col fratello, decide di lasciare il gruppo per un breve periodo di tempo.
Alla formazione dei Dire Straits si aggiungono intanto Alan Clark, tastierista, e Terry Williams, che rimpiazzerà Pick Whiters alle percussioni.

La riconciliazione tra i fratelli Knopfler sembra dare grandi risultati, come dimostra l'uscita, nel 1985, di "Brothers in arms", uno dei CD più venduti in quell'anno. Successivamente pubblicano "Money for nothing"(1989) e "On every street" (1991), album che riscuotono un enorme successo.
Intanto i Dire Straits sono impegnati in uno spettacolare tour mondiale nel quale si esibisono in oltre 200 concerti.
Stremati da questa esperienza, dopo aver pubblicato l'album live "On The Night", i Dire Straits si sciolgono nel 1993 e Knopfler si dedica alla carriera solista scrivendo, tra l'altro, numerose colonne sonore.
