Windtalkers è un war movie ambientato alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale. L'esercito degli Stati Uniti, decide di utilizzare il linguaggio dei nativi americani Navajo come codice segreto così da impedire ai giapponesi la decodifica dei messaggi inviati dagli avversari. Dopo aver capito l'astuto stratagemma, però, l'esercito nipponico decide di catturare i soldati Navajos per usarli come traduttori. Di tutta risposta, il comando americano assegna ai pellirossa degli appositi marine come guardie del corpo, incaricati di uccidere i loro protetti in caso di pericolo.
Il sergente Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage), viene inviato allora sull'isola di Saipan, teatro dello scontro tra americani e giapponesi, per difendere il soldato Navajo Ben (Adam Beach) con il quale svilupperà presto un profondo rapporto d'amicizia. Mentre i nemici avanzano, Ben dovrà mettercela tutta per proteggere il suo amico ed evitare la sua esecuzione in caso di cattura.
