Questo film si rivelò una vera e propria fortuna sia grazie al cast ricco di attori e di caratteristi talentuosi come Charles Durning, sia grazie al regista che con una commedia ricca di colpi di scena e abili incastri narrativi riuscì a vincere sette premi Oscar, sia grazie alla colonna sonora, costituita da una serie di celebri ragtime rielaborati da Marvin Hamlisch.
Nel 2005 è stato scelto per la conservazione nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti.

Illinois, settembre del 1936. Johnny Hooker e il suo amico Luther Coleman sono due truffatori di strada. Dopo aver inconsapevolmente raggirato un corriere al servizio del potente gangster Doyle Lonnegan, Luther viene ucciso per ritorsione e Hooker è costretto a fuggire e a nascondersi per evitare la medesima sorte. Desiderando vendicare Luther, il giovane chiede aiuto ad un vecchio amico del defunto, Henry Gondorff, uno dei più bravi e fantasiosi truffatori degli Stati Uniti. Insieme organizzano una "stangata" ai danni di Lonnegan, creando una finta agenzia di scommesse diretta da Gondorff (sotto lo pseudonimo di mr. Shaw), in cui viene fatto credere al boss di poter vincere facilmente delle ingenti somme di denaro grazie a informazioni riservate fornitegli da Hooker.
