Gregory Benford is another “Classic” SF author in the “Hard SF” category, most known for his “Galactic Center saga” consisting of 6 major works and one novella, it took Gregory 20 years to finish the series (1977-1996).
As many of his colleagues in the Hard SF genre Gregory Benford is also a scientist (Professor of Plasma Physics and Astrophysics) his novel are steeped in scientific accuracy, which many people find uninteresting to read.
The first book came out when laser swords and wizards were dominating science fiction (Star Wars).
“Who needs that science nonsense when you can use the Force?”
So this series might not have gotten the attention it deserves (have not won any awards, been nominated though).
Much of Gregory Benford’s works are collaborations and some of these are previously posted in other collections, hence not included here.

A short synopsis of “The Galactic Center Saga”:
The story is set in the far future and spans thousands of year in a galaxy in which sentient organic life is in constant warfare with sentient mechanical life.
In the Ocean of Night (1977)

Set in a world of lunar colonies, cybernetic miracles, fanatic cults, deadly pollution and famine.
This world of social decay is facing hardship, but not far beyond the shores of space comes a mystery, which one man, astronaut Nigel Walmsley is about to touch.
Across the Sea of Suns (1984)

Lancer, a spaceship built to specifications found in the computers of an alien derelict, journeys to the star, Ra, from which the Earth has received mysterious radio transmissions in English.

1 set the “Classic” are older recordings, the other set “Audible” with newer recordings since I have both and know some people prefer the “original/older” narrations even if the quality is not as “crisp” I include both.
