The Russian equivalent of the McCarthy/HCUAA witch hunt in
the arts was led by Marshal Zhdanov and was popularly known
as ‘Zhdanovshchina’ [Zhdanov’s Terror].

Its object was to harness the arts to the state’s needs, which
at that time meant helping the people come to terms with the
20,000,000 [twenty million] dead in the ‘Great Patriotic War’.

To this end bouts of public ’self criticism’ were organised. This
play describes one of these events [held 1948] where Prokofiev
and Shostakovich were terrorised by Stalin and Zhdanov.
