Deposed by Henry Bolingbroke, Richard II has died mysteriously. Bolingbroke has become Henry IV and must now consolidate his hold on the throne and country, threatened by a host of enemies the French, Welsh rebels, Scottish raiders, and most dangerously by his own vassals. His third son, John, Duke of Bedford, grew to manhood fighting for his father on the Northern Marches. John is a prince of the royal blood, loyal, strong, the greatest ally that his brother - the future Henry V - was to have.
Filled with the clash of bitter rivalries and deadly power struggles, He wages a seemingly endless struggle against treachery, the invading Scots, and always a shortage of money and supplies. His older brother, the future Henry V, also faces similar problems on the Welsh Marches.
Left unfinished at her death, Georgette Heyer’s husband and son chose to publish it as it is with little editing or proofing.
WARNING for those who expect romance — It is pure history. She had planned on writing the life story of Lord John, Duke of Bedford but this book ends right before the death of his father. It covers his life from childhood through to 1413, when he was in his early twenties and is about 1/3 of the intended length.
As with all her historical novels, Heyer did an enormous amount of research to write this book, and this becomes very obvious throughout the story. In addition to discussing the life of one man, we learn about the entire world during that time period, from details of the lives of the princes, to the struggles on the world stage.
The book’s arrangement is more complicated than even then the Spanish Bride. Rather than break each chapter of each part down into its parts I left it in chapter. Not my rip and the original uploader of the torrent merged disks/tapes without checking. Forgive any disk ends I missed. The sound is excellent.
The historical detail is incredible and worth it,
