Emily Gordon is a young and ambitious editor at an independent publisher based in London’s Berkley Square. When esteemed novelist Hugh Morton dies, the firm is asked by his aged widow Jacqueline to commission an authorized biography, and Emily is despatched to the Morton’s lovely house in a lonely part of Suffolk to meet Jacqueline and the biographer, Joel Richards.
In 1949, 19-year-old Isabel Barber packs a suitcase and leaves her family’s brick box house in Kent to take the train to London.
