Dharmputra (God Son) is the story of Dilip, the eldest son of a reputed Hindu doctor. He’s a staunch Hindu who believes as strongly in the revival of Hindu glory in India, as much as in the freedom of the nation from the British rule. He lives religiously while being politically active in the Rashtriya Sangh. He even prefers to marry to a devout Hindu girl who would uphold the glorious ancient Hindu traditions & customs of Seeta & Savitri. But he doesn’t know the secret his parents have been hiding from everyone: that he isn’t their real son, but their God Son; that he belongs to the very community he hates so strongly.
This book is set in Delhi during a period before & after the Independence. Once again, Acharya Chatursen has intricately portrayed the sociopolitical situation of N. India, especially Delhi, during those times. He shows how religious differences existed before Independence but remained beneath a stronger layer of social harmony & patriotism; but how the younger generation started nurturing radical ideas which were primarily aimed at gaining Independence & national autonomy, but simultaneously aspired to reinforce one’s own identity, thus giving rise to different political factions & communalism.
