Poetry YeatsWritten by W. B. Yeats
Read by Cyril Cusack & Siobhan McKenna
Cyril Cusack and Siobhan McKenna were first-rate talents whose reputations seem to have been obscured by the provincialism of mid 20C Ireland.
The readings of Yeats by Siobhan McKenna are perfect (or so they sound to me – it is impossible to imagine these mostly folk-like poems read either more authentically or more beautifully). Cusack too is very fine but whether he is a bit mannered, or gives the words just the right twist, will depend on taste.
These are available on mp3 sites for less than two dollars and normally I would not have bothered to put them up. But this is a vinyl rip (Caedmon TC 1081, released 11/1960) and not only is the sound considerably cleaner, but the presence of the voices is markedly superior with only a few vinyl artefacts along the way.
