Plato (birth name Aristocles) was born in Athens in 428 B.C. to an aristocratic Greek family. Plato’s two brothers, Glaucon and Adeimantus, appear as two of the main characters in The Republic.

The Republic of Plato is one of the most influential works of philosophy in Western history and Plato’s longest work, written c.380 BCE. The Republic, argues for social justice by subjecting the individual to the state’s complete control. The Republic also includes Plato’s famous allegory of the cave.

Books I–V: the eutopia portraying the ideal community, responsibility of the state and the proper education of the Guardians.
Books VI–VII: defines “philosopher” and the ideal rulers of such a community.
Books VIII–X: discusses the pros & cons of the various forms of government.
