Deep in the California woods on an evening in late August, Jane Pearson is camping with her husband Leo and their 5-year-old son Benjamin.

Q: Why are you so interested in utopias and dystopias?
A: The real answer? I find the contemporary world insufferable! It’s morally unacceptable in every way so I’m always imagining utopias… and then I come up with the reasons for why they wouldn’t work. Before you know it, I’m writing a utopian novel.
