.The subject of metamaterials and metasurfaces demands the knowledge of both physics and engineering in the electromagnetic spectrum from RF through THz to optical frequency domain. I am privileged in this regard as I have BSc Physics (Hons.) and also post-BSc, BTech, MTech, and PhD (Tech) degrees in radio physics and electronics. This has given me a sound base for learning the subject of
metamaterials and metasurfaces both from the physics and engineering perspective.
My research on metamaterials began in 2006 when I received a request from a senior scientist from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, India to take up a project on the development of a metamaterial research facility in India as a part of ‘Technology Vision 2020’. This ultimately took shape in late 2006 as a collaborative research of the University of Calcutta, SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research) Kolkata Centre and BARC. We completed a BRNS (Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences) project during 2010–14.
A metamaterial measurement facility has been developed at SAMEER Kolkata Centre where students and researchers work with great success. The First successful plasmonic metamaterial in India was designed, fabricated and tested indigenously in 2009 by our group of the University of Calcutta in collaboration with SAMEER Kolkata Centre and BARC, Mumba.
