Description: An adaptation of the novel by Kusaki, Mizoguchi wanted to make a film about prostitutes, women falling lower and lower on the social ladder hierarchy. The action takes place in Osaka, after the war, in a legalized brothel. The heroines are two sisters forced to become prostitutes in order to survive. In this film, the director acts as a defender of the female lot. He not only openly supports the movement for greater freedoms for women, but and puts Woman at the forefront, as a creature more worthy of respect and sympathy than Man.
