Roman (Alessandro Gassman) è un immigrato rumeno che vive alla periferia romana, tra la miseria e la sporcizia e circondato da amici che come lui sono reietti della società. Semianalfabeta, arrogante e prepotente, traffica con la droga ed è stato abbandonato tempo prima dalla moglie, che scappando gli ha lasciato in custodia il figlio Cucciolo (Giovanni Anzaldo), ormai prossimo alla maggiore età. Per emanciparsi da un padre iperprotettivo e spesso violento, che vorrebbe per lui un futuro diverso e migliore del suo, Cucciolo si impegna nello studio ma lentamente finisce con il farsi coinvolgere da un giro di droga al quale inizialmente sembrava estraneo, rimanendo così prigioniero della dipendenza dall'eroina.
