Als kind moet Klaus Störtebeker toezien hoe zijn ouders wreed om het leven worden gebracht.
Hij vindt onderdak en bescherming bij een klooster, maar de kloostermuren kunnen hem de
verschrikkingen niet laten vergeten, en zijn drang naar gerechtigheid niet stillen. Al snel wordt
hij door de Abt uit het klooster gezet. Klaus gaat hierna op weg naar Hamburg om bij zijn broer
Jan te gaan. Deze keus blijkt het leven van Klaus voor altijd te domineren.

Störtebeker is a sailor in search of justice for the brutal murder of his parents. When he realizes
there\'s no way of obtaining retribution because the murderers are the powerful Konrad von
Wallenrod and his son, Simon, he becomes a pirate, repudiating the rules of a hypocritical society
and living by his own law. But his keen sense of justice and solidarity make him a target for the
hatred of the powerful, who hound him relentlessly. Throughout his adventures, Störtebeker
attempts to win back his great love, Elisabeth, who has been promised in marriage to Simon.
