Glasgow, 1973. De jonge puber John McGillan staat op het punt naar de middelbare school te gaan.
Hij is een slimme, gevoelige jongen, happig om te gaan studeren, maar het geluk is niet met hem. Zijn
familie is straatarm, zijn gehate vader een dronken pestkop. Zijn leraren – die hem straffen voor de
‘zonden’ van zijn oudere broer – zijn vanaf het begin tegen hem. John staat er alleen voor. En dan zijn
er nog de bendes. De ‘Neds’ (Non-Educated Delinquents). Boefjes met wapens en attitude. Belust op
wraak sluit John zich bij hen aan. Maar zijn woede en frustratie brengen hem steeds verder en verder
op de rand van de afgrond. Zonder toekomst. Met slechts één buitengewone kans op verlossing.

We meet confident, studious John McGill just as he\'s about to start secondary school, where he fully
expects to continue his so-far glittering academic career. But there are dark clouds on the horizon.
His friendship with middle-class Julian shines a light on both his poor background and the dysfunction
of his home, where his father is drunk, violent and ineffective, his mother is troubled and repressed
and his elder brother is always in trouble with the law. At school, there are one or two good
teachers, but most are uninterested and unhelpful in the face of the brutal and territorial gang
culture which has spread from local housing estates to the schoolyard.
