Rio tells the colorful story of Blu, a Spix's macaw who, after being captured as a hatchling, lives a domesticated and happy life with his owner, Linda, in small-town Minnesota. The only problem is, he never learned to fly.

When a scientist discovers Blu is the last male of his species, he and Linda travel to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, the last female. But Jewel is everything Blu isn't: fiercely independent and a free spirit. Thrown together by a series of events and an encounter with animal smugglers, the two birds, chained together, must embark on a thrilling adventure through the bustling streets and lush jungles of Brazil. Along the way, Blu must find the courage to confront his fears and learn to fly, while discovering friendship, love, and what it truly means to be a bird.
