The biggest issue with the image quality is that the scenes are just too blurry. At first sight, I was even thinking if there's something wrong with my media player settings. After some analysis, we determined that the source has a native resolution of only 720p, and was upscaled to 1080p using an awfully primitive and blurry scaling method. We could have simply used lossless de-scaling to restore everything back to 720p, but the OP and some text in the ED are actually native 1080p. To save these details, we de-scaled only the 720p parts, then upscaled to 1080p using a more general and sharper scaling method. This makes the scenes appear much more consistent overall.
