Hinode Seto is a very obvious reference both in personality and appearance to Chief Keisuke Daimon, the main character of the very popular 80s police action drama, Seibu Keisatsu, as portrayed by the late Tetsuya Watari. A grim, hot blooded detective who occasionally sheds emotional manly tears, he was known for his intense appearance, general badassery, and gold-rimmed dark sunglasses. It's worth noting that in the five year run of Seibu Keisatsu, 4,680 vehicles were destroyed during the course of filming, 4.8 tons of explosives were used, and 320 buildings were destroyed, all intentionally in the course of filming.

Smat mentions the birthplace of Kenji Miyazawa in the next episode preview. Miyazawa was a famous poet and resident of Iwate, who around 1927 wrote "Night on the Galactic Railway" -- a classic fantasy novel that became the template for Leiji Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999.
