Peter Bernstein is a master of straight-ahead swing with submerged complexities

For this live date the American guitarist Peter Bernstein reunites the band he assembled for his 1994 album Signs of Life. Then the line-up was easy to corral — all four men were young and on the way up. Now it’s a bit harder: Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Greg Hutchinson are some of the busiest people in jazz. Yet in 2015 reunite they did. The results are, as you may expect, quite special.

Bernstein is a master of straight-ahead swing with submerged complexities, which is a way of saying that, while his music is advanced, the listener never feels shut out. His composition Hidden Pockets, for example, is a harmonically rich, horn-like tune with constant key changes. Challenging to play, but not to listen to as Bernstein weds his warm, Wes Montgomery-like tone with a flow of melodic ideas.

Jive Coffee takes the fertile chord structure of Tea for Two and sets it to a 5/4 beat. McBride’s and Hutchinson’s bass and drums trace intricate patterns within the spacious time signature as Mehldau’s piano comps jaggedly. Useless Metaphor is impossible to hum, but easy to like. Bernstein is fanciful and featherlight, while Mehldau’s solo is a joyous tapestry of rippling right-hand runs and blue notes.

These and six other strong originals are balanced with a trio of Thelonious Monk classics. A pensive solo take on Crepuscule With Nellie leads into We See, where over a walking bass Bernstein’s lines grow more ragged and Mehldau gets some of the composer’s grit into his normally pearl-like playing. The ballad Pannonica is prettily pragmatic. What a shame these four can’t get together more often. (Smoke Sessions)

Guitarist Peter Bernstein jokes in his announcements on this live session that the launch party for Signs Live was a long time coming. In December 1994, four then lesser-known twentysomething jazz musicians assembled in New York to record Signs of Life, Bernstein’s second album for the Criss Cross label. Since then, bassist Christian McBride, drummer Gregory Hutchinson, and particularly pianist Brad Mehldau, have established themselves among the leading voices of their generation (in Mehldau’s case, arguably the definitive voice), but as a quartet, they never got around to performing live.
This engrossing double-CD puts right the omission, with four masters of the American mainstream listening, responding, reaching out, showing how just how far each has travelled in the intervening years.
