"Absolutely exciting saxophonist, the viola Con Brio." Alex Dutilh, FRANCE MUSIC.
Dmitry Baevsky was a great alto saxophonist from the New York jazz scene, born in Russia. With a dark and warm timbre, a formidable technique, an obvious sense of drive, he is now one of the most prominent saxophonists.
The only son of a writer and a translator, Dmitry grew up in Saint Petersburg in the midst of books ... He began his piano at the age of six, but discovered his true passion for adolescent music when he The acquisition of his first alto saxophone. Although there are not really professional musicians in his entourage, his family is very much related to music. Her grandmother plays the violin, and her great-grandfather Moisei Beregovsky is a renowned and respected ethno-musicologist who will spend his entire life gathering the melodies and lyrics of Yiddish folklore, as well as traditional dance melodies Of Eastern Europe (Klezmer music).
Dmitry studied for four years at the Mussorgsky College of Music in St. Petersburg with the brilliant Russian saxophonist Gennady Goldstein.
At the age of nineteen, Dmitry auditioned to join the Jazz department of the prestigious New School University in New York. He was awarded a scholarship for his complete schooling and thus left Russia, which he finally did not see again until fifteen years later. In recent years, Baevsky has toured extensively throughout the world and his quartet includes Jeb Patton (piano), David Wong (double bass) and Joe Strasser (drums).
It looks like a code word, almost a password. The name of Dmitry Baevsky provokes an immediate complicity between those who know the prodigy of the alto saxophone. One finds with delight the hallucinated Russian of St. Petersburg who lives for fifteen years in the USA.
To evaluate the phenomenon, imagine a Charlie Parker transposed in the 21st century, who would have integrated the contributions of his own followers: Sonny Stitt, Jackie Mc Lean, Phil Woods, Japanese Sadao Watanabe and Sonny Rollins. Added to the volubility of the aforementioned gentlemen, the feeling of the granite tenors (Ben Webster, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, plus Johnny Hodges for the blues). If Parker's immense genius stirs you up, cancel everything and go listen to Baevsky, you'll fall three times. (...) Two weeks after receiving the CD released in 2005 (Introducing, with Cedar Walton on piano and Jimmy Cobb, at Lineage Records), the puck still does not take off my reader.
